Sohan Dasgupta: Lawyer, Leader, and Visionary

Sohan Dasgupta, JD, PhD, is an accomplished lawyer, executive, and statesman whose career reflects a steadfast commitment to excellence, public service, and principled advocacy. Dr. Dasgupta is a syncretic strategist and visionary. He has represented clients before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in federal and state courts, and has appeared before governmental agencies and Congress. His practice has encompassed regulatory and compliance matters, investigations, international trade and arbitration, and complex cross-border disputes. Dr. Dasgupta has also argued cases before several U.S. Courts of Appeals.

In 2025, Dr. Dasgupta was appointed Assistant Secretary for Trade and Economic Security at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he provided leadership on matters involving the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), Team Telecom, Information and Communications Technology and Services (ICTS), Arctic security and the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact, and the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force (FLETF). He remains deeply committed to advancing the Nation’s trade and economic security interests. Previously, he had served as Deputy General Counsel of DHS. In that capacity, Dr. Dasgupta had contributed to investigations, litigation, regulatory and compliance initiatives, and crisis management.

Dr. Dasgupta also led the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a federal agency of approximately 300 professionals with a budget of about $5.8 billion. Under his leadership, the MCC strengthened its operations and investment portfolio, enhancing its effectiveness as a key instrument of U.S. economic statecraft. Dr. Dasgupta’s tenure transformed the MCC into a vital national security and foreign policy asset for the United States.

Dr. Dasgupta has spoken at numerous legal and policy fora and has been invited to deliver formal addresses hosted by the Congress of the United States, the British Parliament, the Hungarian Parliament, the Congress of Guatemala, the Romanian Parliament, the Congress of the Philippines, and the Latin American Parliament.

Dr. Dasgupta earned his BA from Columbia University; MSc from the University of Oxford; PhD from the University of Cambridge; and JD from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. He clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
